Podcastepisode: Racism and Fear in School and Teachereducation

The podcast “Teacher Education and School in Racism” is a joint project of the research groups Conditions for successful Racism-Sensitive Teacher Education (GraL) and Continuities and New Configurations of Institutional Racism in Schools (KoNIR).

The third episode of the podcast project focuses on the role of affects, especially fear, in the context of racism. We ask how feelings are not only formed individually, but also mediated socially and institutionally. This also concerns the consequences of these affective dynamics: What role does fear play in dealing with racism? And how does it influence action, positioning, and opportunities for action in schools and teacher education? Topics of this episode:

  • the relationship between racism and affects
  • fear as a socially mediated experience
  • conditions and effects of fear in institutional contexts
  • significance for schools and teacher education
  • perspectives on positioning within a migration society

Guiding questions:

  • How is fear connected to racist structures?
  • What consequences does this have for pedagogical action?
  • What role do social power relations play in this?
